What are amino acids?

Amino acids are also known as the building blocks of proteins. A protein may consist of hundreds of amino acids, which in their turn are arranged in different patterns.

We find more than 80 different amino acids in nature. Human proteins contain 20 different amino acids, of which we must take in eight through our food or supplements: lysine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, leucine, isoleucine, threonine, methionine and valine.
